Induction Programme

The Department inaugurated its academic year activities with an induction programme for the first-year undergraduate students on 29 July 2026 at the College Seminar Hall. The session was led by Dr. Shyama Sasidharan. Focusing on the significance of effective communication in the digital age, the programme introduced students to the challenges and opportunities of navigating an increasingly interconnected world while emphasising the importance of critical thinking, responsible digital engagement, and interpersonal communication.

Our Post Graduate students - Hafsana P.H and Shahna Sherin - receiving the Chief Minister's "Vidyarthi Pratibha Puraskaram" from the Minister of Higher Education, Kerala.    

The Literary Interface

Dialogues, the literary forum of the department hosted an interactive session with authors on 26.02.26 at the college seminar hall. It was followed by a dance adaptation of Maya Angelou's "Phenomenal Woman" by the UG Students.     

A Moment of Distinction

  We are delighted to share that Ms Nivedya K. Kumar, our fourth-semester B.A. English Honours student has secured the University Merit Scholarship of the University of Calicut, in recognition of her exemplary performance in the University Examinations. 

Peer Teaching

                     On 18th February 2026, the Postgraduate students of our department conducted a teaching session for the Second and Fourth Semester B.A. English Honours students, introducing them to the various genres of Fiction and Poetry, and engaging them with key concepts such as marginalisation and intersectionality.

Koodiyattam Lecture Demonstration - SPICMACAY

             The Department of English, in association with SPICMACAY, conducted a lecture demonstration on Koodiyattam, the ancient Sanskrit theatre tradition of India, with a special focus on the fourfold abhinaya as described in the Natyasastra . Kalamandalam Girija, along with her students, offered the graduate and postgraduate students a glimpse into the art on 6 January 2026. The session witnessed active participation from students of other departments as well, thereby introducing the academic community to an aspect of the Indian Knowledge System.

Documentary Screening - Saving walden's World - 28/01/26

  Saving Walden's World  is an award-winning documentary directed by Jim Merkel. It follows Merkel's journey from a former arms dealer and military engineer to a sustainability advocate raising his son Walden on an off-grid homestead. The film explores women-led solutions in Kerala (India), Cuba, and Slovenia, highlighting sustainable societies with universal access to education, healthcare, and women's rights amid climate challenges. The documentary was screened by Prisma, the film forum of the department, together with the college film club on 28th January 2026. The screening was followed by a very active discussion and interaction.     

Seminar - Why the Mahabharata Still Enthralls - 21/01/2026

 The department organised a seminar focusing on the contemporary relevance of the Mahabharata , delivered by Dr Sreedevi K Menon, Associate Professor of English, Mercy College Palakkad. The talk examined the Mahabharata not merely as a mythological epic but as a profound repository of timeless dilemmas and psychological insights that resonate with contemporary life. It highlighted how the epic’s central concerns—dharma, ethical ambiguity, governance, and familial and social conflict—closely parallel present-day challenges in leadership, justice, and personal integrity. The seminar ultimately reaffirmed the epic’s significance within Indian Knowledge Systems, presenting it as a vital source of wisdom for critically engaging with the pressing issues of the modern world.

Illuminazione

  "Illuminazione", simply means illumination or enlightenment. It is a participative and experiential learning series organised by the department providing a platform for our Post Graduates to present their research area and discuss with their peers.  This academic year's illuminazione was conducted in association with the college Research Cell on 21st January 2026.  

Induction Course - Words, Worlds, and Human Experience

Ms. Veena S, Assistant Professor of English, NSS College Parakkulam gave an engaging session on literature and the power of words to create worlds, as part of the Induction programme organised by the department on 22.08.2025  

Bridge Course - Discovering the Joy of Words

Ms. Indu V. S. delivered an enchanting talk on the joy of words, language, and reading, introducing the students to the wondrous world of literature. The session was organized as part of the Bridge Course conducted by the Department of English on 21.08.2025
